A Summer Day in Paris

Texas

13 Jul

With only one day to spend in the heart of Paris, it was hard to decide what we should do first.

Of course, we wanted to take in the amazing architecture.

We also wanted to take it slow and stroll next to some beautiful fountains. But it was the allure of the Eiffel Tower that caught our eye.

Paris, TX is a sleepy town in the northeast part of the state near the Texas/Oklahoma border.  Following the tradition of other American cities sharing the name Paris, an Eiffel Tower replica standing 65 feet was erected in town.   A little interstate contest ensued, with Paris, Tennessee erecting a 70 foot tower.  Not to be outdone, the Texans added the red cowboy hat to raise the height above 70 feet and add a uniquely Texas flare.

The kids squinted up into the sky and surveyed the tower with various levels of disdain.

“I thought it would be…bigger,” said one.

“It’s kinda corny,” offered another.

“We drove out of our way for this,” was the final malign.

Admittedly, this structure cannot hold a candle to the original Eiffel Tower, but in France you could never do this.  And there’s just something about that hat.

You totally got me! Here I was thinking you did a one day stopover on our way home from Rome. Then I saw the hat and wondered what random holiday the French would ever put a red hat on top of the Eiffel Tower and how huge was that hat! I love the pics of your kids hanging from the bottom though. I can’t wait for my guy to be able to do that.
